You don’t have to be born in another country nor do you have to actually learn another language to speak it, you only need an accent that your listener has not heard before to be either misunderstood or not understood at all, making the information you are conveying totally wrong!

John Blagg had an accent, we just don’t know which one it was, maybe it was one of the many Irish accents, or one of the northern English ones, what ever it was it changed his life for ever.

John had been married to Mary Godwin for 20 years and she died without bringing any children into the world, after Mary died he met Margaret Buckingham and although she was many many years his junior she was 18 he was 45 or perhaps more.

John and Margaret bought 9 children into the world and because John spoke a “different language ” to the person who was writting down the name of his children, they were registered not with the name Blagg but Blag, Bleg, Blegg and Blay but one of the nine was a Blagg, and one was registered with the parents names as John Blay and Margaret Burke , but I knew he existed that’s why i kept looking to find him.

So you don’t have to speak another language to be not understood.
